‘Plewa 14/100’ - Rita van der Vegt (NL)
Glazed ceramic tubes
2005

This work is composed out of 100 ceramic ventilation tubes, type PLEWA 14, provided by the german manufacturer of ceramic building material in Trier, Germany. Normally these tubes are placed on the inside of a fireplace, as their purpose is entirely functional. Through the process of glazing, the ventilation tubes have been transformed to serve a new role. They have become playful building blocks and take on aesthetic properties, as well as functional/ structural ones.

By adding tinoxide and chromoxide-rich compounds to the basic glaze during the firing process, a colorshift emerges that leads to diverse (and often unexpected) variations on the basic glaze.
