Multi-point touch screens workshop

 

The next step in interactive media is multi-point touch screen interfaces. Since the release of Microsoft's Surface computing and Apple's iPhone, more and more company's are looking for new talent in the creative industry that can work with this new technology.

Three day workshop

As an extension of the Interactive Displays project, SOCO will hold a series of three workshops in Amsterdam starting 6 December on how to make your own multi-point touch screen. SOCO has invited expert instructors who will demonstrate how to built a multi-point touch screen installation as well as how to develop multi-point (multi-user) software applications.

1st Workshop: Dec. 6 ( from 19.00-21.00 )
Hardware - explaining the difference between FTIR and diffused illumination

2nd Workshop: Dec. 13 ( from 19.00-21.00 )
Software - introduction to interface design

3rd Workshop: Dec. 20 ( from 19.00-21.00 )
Software - programming in Flash-based on NUI Group TouchLib open-source multi-touch platform

 

Who can apply

SOCO offers twenty 20 persons the change to participate in all three workshops for free. The workshops are open to artists and designers who have an interest in Multi-point touch screen interfaces and also have some basic knowledge of Flash programming.

Participants will be expected to bring their own equipment to complete their multi-touch setup: IR lamps, camera, projection screen projector and a suitable computer (dual core processor)* (aprox. cost 150euro).

 

Through the course of the workshops, participants will develop their own multi-point touch screen projects which will be presented at SOCO in February. During this special presentation, a jury will select two projects which are then offered the opportunity to be shown at the SOCO exhibitions space within the context of the exhibition “Drawing Conclusions” (March 2008).

 

Anyone interested in applying for the workshops, should send a brief email explaining their motivation and interest in multi-touch interaction to peter[at]socoamsterdam.nl by 29 Nov 2007 . Any online and/or visual supporting material such as photos/videos of previous projects is much appreciated. Applicants will be informed of participation on 30 Nov. 2007 .

 

Online

The workshops will be filmed and broadcast online to spread the reach of the information being taught. This opens up the possibility for online participation.

Workshop videos will also be posted on NUI Group community forum website. The online discussion forums will provide continued support for both the workshop participants as well as online participants while they work on their projects.

* In special cases when a workshop participant cannot provide himself access to all the necessary equipment, it will be possible to reserve some time on the SOCO tables (Sunday mornings) so that they may be able to work on their project.
