SOCO (Social Contemporary Center for the Arts) is an exhibition/ project space in Amsterdam, which has been opened since October of 2005. Exhibitions focus on the area between applied and fine arts taking place on a regular basis. SOCO Amsterdam is actively involved as a production house, providing artists with assistance towards the realization and exhibition of new artworks. Through past exhibitions, SOCO has produced and exhibited sixteen large scale projects as well as a numerous art-related events by national and international artists. SOCO is financed without subsidies, by means of private funding and commercial sponsors. The four exhibitions which take place throughout the course of this cultural season, explores the relationship between artist, exhibition space, financier and audience. As a research project, SOCO's goal is the redefinition of the functions as well as the form of the contemporary art institution.




SOCO (Social Contemporary Center for the Arts) is een nieuw initiatief in Amsterdam dat sinds oktober 2005 is geopend. Met grote regelmaat vinden er exposities en andere, aan kunst gerelateerde evenementen plaats. SOCO is als productiehuis actief betrokken bij het initiëren en produceren van nieuwe kunstprojecten. Over de afgelopen periode zijn er maar liefst zestien projecten gerealiseerd door nationale en internationale kunstenaars. Gefinancierd zonder subsidies, met behulp van privé gelden en commerciële sponsors. Deze projecten liggen in het grensgebied tussen autonome en toegepaste kunst. Aan de hand van vier tentoonstellingen wordt gedurende het jaar de relatie tussen kunstenaar, expositieruimte en publiek onderzocht. Het uiteindelijke doel is een herdefiniëring van de functie van een hedendaagse kunstinstituut.
 
SOCO past bij de huidige discussie over de rol van een expositieruimte. In een tijd waarin steeds vaker culturele organisaties worden bekritiseerd vanwege hun ontoegankelijke, statische karakter en stoffige imago, biedt SOCO een antwoord. Dat ligt in haar alternatieve werkwijze voor het tentoonstellen en produceren van hedendaagse kunst voor een nieuwe generatie kunstenaars en bezoekers.
